And why are dreams and dream-images so indirect and covert? Perhaps for two reasons. One is that the dreaming mind simply does not speak the same language as the waking mind. Dreams convey knowing in a language of dense imagery, usually conveying multiple, even contradictory meanings, for even the logic of dreams is different from the logic of waking life. It is exactly the logic of the psycho-emotional world, which has no difficulty with contradiction, tension, and simultaneity, all concepts anathema to waking logic. The other reason is that dreams are often beginning to tell us what we are not ready to hear. It is the nature of our psychic being that we already know what we seek to know, and what we seek to avoid knowing.
